SPINAL TAP
line up: David St. Hubbins (vocals/guitar)
Nigel Tufnel (guitar)
Viv Savage (keyboards)
Joe 'Mama' Besser (drums)
English rockband, founded in 1964 by the two friends David St. Hubbins and Jeff
Beck-lookalike Nigel Tufnel. After the first drummer died in a bizarre
gardening-accident, it'll be a bad time for drummers: one after another quits
(most of them explode during a concert) and they have a total amount of 35
drummers. Nevertheless, the songs that St. Hubbins and Tufnel write are getting
more and more refinement, as demonstrated by songs like "Big Bottom" and "Break
like the Wind". The band is a constant factor in the turbulent rock-world and
it's a big shock to the members, when, end of the seventies, the rock-press
turns against them (just one critic is enough, referring to their LP "Shark
Sandwich" as 'Shit Sandwich'). Just when a camera-team follows the band
during an American tour in 1982 (to make a documentary about the band), Spinal
Tap gets into trouble: decreasing number of attendances at their shows,
troubles concerning the cover of their new album "Smell the Glove", arguments
with their management (largely due to St. Hubbins girlfriend) and even
arguments between the band members. Guitarplayer Nigel Tufnel leaves the band,
but returns later, thanks to the success of the single "Sex Farm" in Japan and
they're planning a tour in Japan. During his comeback-concert drummer Mick
Shrimpton explodes, and he's replaced by Joe 'Mama' Besser. After the Japanese
tour, it's getting silent around Spinal Tap, though St. Hubbins announces to
make acoustical versions of his songs and record them with the London
Philharmonic Orchestra. Being invited by Ronnie James Dio, St. Hubbins and
Smalls contribute to the song "Stars" of the Hear 'n' Aid-project ('85),
because 'they didn't get any other offers'.
